Vaccine epidemiology research in pediatric infectious diseases
Megumi Hara1)
At the 55th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases, I delivered an educational lecture focusing on vaccine epidemiology in the field of pediatric infectious diseases. In the first half of the lecture, I discussed the concepts of vaccine epidemiology and effectiveness evaluation, as well as key considerations in research design. In the second half, I presented a practical example of an epidemiological study conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in children, covering the entire process from study planning to data collection, statistical analysis, and interpretation of results. This paper primarily summarizes the first half of the lecture. As one of the research domains under the conference theme, “Striving to Overcome Emerging Infectious Diseases: Aspiring to be Physician Scientists in Pediatric Infectious Diseases”, I hope this summary deepens the understanding of vaccine epidemiology and serves as a useful reference for those interested in pursuing this challenging field.
