This study reports a case of osteomyelitis of the clavicle in an early male infant aged 39 days. He presented inflamed swelling involving the clavicle and was admitted to Chiba Childrens' Hospital. After physical and clinical examination, he was diagnosed with osteomyelitis of the clavicle with abscess. Incision and drainage of soft tissue was necessary, as penicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus had been detected in a pus culture. Despite effective antimicrobial treatment, the pus continued to flow from the abscess and thus surgical debridement and sequestrectomy of the clavicle were required. The patient was treated with a 4-week course of intravenous antibiotics and two more weeks of oral antibiotics, and there has been no recurrence of osteomyelitis for about two years.
Osteomyelitis of the clavicle is rare in children, with only a few cases reported in Japan. When early infants or schoolchildren develop this disease, S. aureus is often detected, and requires surgery in many cases. Collaboration with orthopedic physicians is important when treating this disease.
