Clinical and microbiological study of group G haemolytic streptococci isolated from paediatric patients in a regional hospital

During the two-year period from April 2007 to March 2009, we isolated 78 strains of group G haemolytic streptococci from 70 children (ages from 4 months to 16 years and 1 month, mean age 6 years and 2 months) in the paediatric outpatient department of Konan Kosei Hospital with respiratory and/or skin infections (6 patients with recurrent infections reattended after an interval of at least 1 month). Monthly analysis of isolate numbers revealed no evidence of seasonality. Infections were generally mild, with all patients recovering without complications or sequelae. All isolated strains were susceptible to β-lactam antibiotics, with resistance to clarithromycin, azithromycin, clindamycin, and norfloxacin seen in 18%, 15%, 26%, and 15% of isolates, respectively.
