Streptococcus bovis, biotype II/2 was renamed Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus as a Group D Streptococci in 2003, according to biochemical classification. The number of invasive infections due to this organism in neonates and infants have risen in recent years. This paper reports a 39-day-old boy, who was under inpatient management in a neonate intensive care unit for prematurity and low birth weight, with bacterial meningitis due to S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus. Given that the same microorganism was detected later on a maternal vaginal culture, horizontal transmission between mother and infant was suggested as the route of infection in this case. The main route of S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus transmission is unclear. This article reports the first case of S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus detection from both infant and mother, and reviews the results of previous reports on S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus infection.
