In Japan, current Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and pneumococcal vaccination status of high-risk children against invasive Hib disease and invasive pneumococcal disease who are outside age group of routine vaccination program, are not clarified. We carried out e-mail questionnaire survey to members of Japanese Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases to investigate Hib vaccine, 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13), and 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) status of the high-risk children. In total, 91 hospitals completed the questionnaire, 44/91 (48%) hospitals regularly take care of high-risk children who had underlying diseases such as asplenia, hematopoietic neoplasms, primary immunodeficiency diseases, and post transplantations. Approximately, 50% hospitals recommended Hib vaccine and PCV13 for high-risk children who are outside age group of routine vaccination program. The estimated immunization rates of Hib vaccine and PCV13 were different from hospital to hospital. PPSV23 was recommended in 92% hospitals for asplenic children at least one dose, but less recommended for other high-risk children. The necessity of official recommendation of Hib and pneumococcal vaccine schedule for high-risk children was confirmed through this survey.
