Many patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) need immunosuppressive treatment, during which vaccination against infectious diseases is important, especially regarding vaccine preventable diseases. In accordance with the Guideline of Vaccination for Pediatric Transplant Recipients and Immunocompromised Hosts 2014, affected infants who do not complete the live vaccine-attenuated vaccinations at the onset of disease cannot receive live vaccines during the treatment course of JIA. Therefore, these patients need to be immunized prior to the immunosuppressive therapy. Healthy infants can usually receive more than one live vaccine simultaneously and safely. However, there is little information about the safety and efficacy of more than one live vaccine administered to children with JIA.
This study reports, herein, two patients with JIA, who received four kinds of vaccines (measles, rubella, varicella, and mumps) simultaneously with safety and effectiveness. These cases suggest that children with JIA may receive more than one live vaccine at the same time safely and effectively.
