A case of bacterial enterocolitis due to simultaneous Salmonella Saintpaul and Plesiomonas shigelloides infection
Satoru KUTSUNA1)
Salmonella Saintpaul is a pathogen that causes food-poisoning, while Plesiomonas shigelloides is pathogen often found in fish and water environments, particularly in tropical and subtropical areas. The latter is a major cause of diarrhea in travelers, and frequently found in the host in conjunction with other pathogens. Simultaneous infection by Salmonella Saintpaul and Plesiomonas shigelloides is rare in Japan. Here, a 9-year-old boy is described presenting with fever, diarrhea and abdominal pain. He was admitted to this hospital after experiencing a convulsion. Blood and stool culture detected Salmonella Saitpaul and both Salmonella Saintpaul and Plesiomonas shigelloides, respectively. The patient was diagnosed with bacterial enterocolitis, and his symptoms were resolved one week after initiation of intravenous antibiotics.
