A case report: varicella-zoster virus associated acute meningitis in immunocompetent children
Tomoki KAWAHARA1), Masayuki NAGASAWA1)
Two cases of meningitis complicated with herpes zoster were reported in a 5 year old and 13 year old girl, who presented with fever, eruption, and vomiting. Pleocytosis and varicella zoster virus (VZV)-specific genome were detected in the spinal fluid of both patients. Intravenous acyclovir administration was effective and resulted in no neurological sequelae. Although central neurological complications such as encephalopathy and meningitis are rare in pediatric patients with herpes zoster, early diagnosis and treatment are important when vomiting or meningeal signs appear during the course of herpes zoster.
