Influence of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccine in children with pneumonia
Reiko SHIMBASHI, Takahiro NIIZUMA
This study investigated the effect of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV 7) and Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccine (Hib vaccine) on pediatric pneumonia patients between the periods of 2007-2008 and 2012-2013. Both the percentage of pneumonia cases and that of pneumococcal pneumonia, relative to total hospitalizations, decreased by 18.0%→14.4%, p=0.0051 and 4.7%→3.0%, p=0.012, respectively. Also, the duration of hospitalizations decreased by 6.82 days→6.31 days, p=0.02. However, it is considered that most of the H. influenzae pneumonia cases were not decreased by type B influenzae vaccination.
Therefore, this study regarded PCV7 as being effective for preventing pediatric pneumonia.
