We investigated 955 Streptococcus pneumoniae strains isolated from 955 patients who attended the Pediatrics Department of Konan Kosei Hospital during the recent 5 years (2008-2012). About 70% of all isolates were obtained from children aged 0-3 years old, and the number of the isolates showed a tendency to decrease after 2010. Although the PCG resistance (PISP+PRSP) rate was around 60% until 2010, it showed a decrease to 46% in 2011 and decreased further to 32% in 2012. In contrast, no changes were noted in the MICs of 22 other antimicrobial agents. Invasive S. pneumoniae infection was found in 23 patients (2.4%). Among 13 isolates of them investigated for capsular serotypes, 10 strains (77%) had serotypes covered by the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13).
