We describe a case of primary lung abscess in a 6-year-old male. We initially performed conservative treatment with intravenous tazobactam/piperacillin. The clinical symptoms and blood test findings all improved, however, the abscess increased in size on chest X-ray examinations. We therefore performed percutaneous drainage, which was combined with ultrasound and radioscopic guidance. There have so far been no reports describing drainage under ultrasound and radioscopic guidance for the treatment of a pediatric primary lung abscess in Japan. We believe that the drainage under ultrasound and radioscopic guidance is an useful method for treating primary lung abscesses from the viewpoints of simplicity, safety and accuracy. We also describe the clinical examination findings of primary lung abscesses in Japan.
