Case report of a four-month-old infant female with Haemophilus influenzae meningitis complicated with subarachnoid abscess that was treated effectively with sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. Treatment with ceftriaxone, meropenem, chloramphenicol and others was ineffective in relieving this infant's symptoms. Finally, treatment with sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (S-T) was started because of its excellent ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Following treatment, the condition of the patient including laboratory findings rapidly improved, and she was discharged without any apparent neurological sequelae. S-T should be considered as a treatment option when Haemophilus influenzae meningitis is complicated with subarachnoid abscess.
