CASE 1: A male infant with a birth weight of 4,022 g born by cesarean section at 39 weeks and one day presented at birth with generalized skin eruptions and was hospitalized four days after birth when the eruptions evolved into vesicles or pustules. Since he presented at birth with generalized skin eruptions and his mother had vaginal colonization with Candida albicans (C. albicans) during labor, congenital candidiasis was suspected. Values for all other examinations (including blood examinations and chest X-rays) were within normal limits. Since he was a term infant, congenital cutaneous candidiasis was suspected and confirmed by cultures from oral mucosa and scales. He was given topical antifungal therapy and recovered completely.
CASE 2: A female infant with a birth weight of 1,782 g born by vaginal delivery at 30 weeks and six days presented at birth with generalized skin eruptions and showed severe respiratory distress. Since he presented at birth with generalized skin eruptions and his mother had candidal vaginitis during labor, congenital candidiasis was suspected. She showed prominent leukocytosis and a chest X-ray with atypical findings (hazy infiltrates). Since she was a preterm infant, congenital systemic candidiasis was suspected and confirmed by cultures from her tracheal secretions. She was given intravenous systemic antifungal therapy and recovered completely.
